Jana Gana Mana Written in Sanskritised Bengali, it is the first of five stanzas of a Brahmo hymn composed and scored by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
It was first sung at the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress,on 27 December 1911. Jana Gana Mana was officially adopted by the Constituent Assembly as the Indian national anthem on January 24, 1950. The music for the "current version" is said to be derived from a composition for the song by Ram Singh Thakur, although some dispute this.

Congrats to all Indian,
Thanks to the great Rabindranath Tagore.
Jai hind,...
As far as i know, this song was originally written in the praise of british king. It depicts him as 'bharat bhagya vidata'.
After independence due to pressure from Tagore's supporters it was adopted as national anthem.
I am not getting any proud feelings. sorry....
I am not sure after all the bomb attacks.

Hello
All
Garv se kaho we are INDIAN
Great Feeling.
We all proud to be Indian
To Rajeev Bharadwaj and others of his ilk, I guess you can always go by the conspiracy theories, and there always will be such nay-sayers ... but the truth remains ... as someone who has read Tagore in his original language, and as someone who somewhat speaks a bit of Bengali as his mother-tongue ... what Tagore wrote always had more than a couple of underlying meanings ... and the reader is free to choose whichever appeals to him/her ... that Tagore was a philosopher-poet of incredible acumen is incontestable, his words speak for themselves ... moreover, this song has a further 4 stanzas ... reading them first is a necessity before commenting ... all those who haven't please first do the homework ... then proceed ... for all those who are happy at what we have as our motherland in-spite of her problems and our own collective failings ... rejoice ... for this is a song which celebrates the essence of being an Indian and the pride of being so rests with us.
In addition, what do you mean RB sir, that Tagore's "supporters" foisted the anthem, on us ? There were very few Bengalees in the Constituent Assembly ... 9/100 ... less than Bengal's contributary population in 1950. Also, Tagore died in 1941 ... so things speak for themselves ...
What does it even mean by "....best national anthem" ???? Why isn´t the national anthem of Ecuador the best? Don´t Ecuadorian people feel proud to hear their anthem? I´m bloody sure they do!
We should really do away with such unnecessary emotions and actually do something to make India a great country...I mean really a great country! I´m not entirely sure we could possibly be proud of how we treat our own people, corruption, overpopulation, safety issues, etc.
...and anyway, on what parameters was this decision of "best national anthem" made??
I am and will be proud to be an India ****
A hearty congrates to My mother land********

Sri Rabindranath Tagore was the person to best describe the rich culture traditions spread across INDIA.
Now it's OUR duty to enrich this and make OUR country more IMPROVED , CORRUPTION-FREE , HELPFUL , PEACEFUL place to live in.
YOUTH of today - every drop counts to an ocean. Let you do one good thing today and spread awareness on anti-corruption and other evils of the society.
"We are proud of our country. But it's time to make our county feel the same about us!"

Please find time to read this entire text........
IMP : This is supposed to be an article in Times of India to mark 59th Independence Day, though i'm not sure if i can vouch for the veracity of this document.
Jana Gana Mana" - Just a thought for the National Anthem! How well do you know about it?
I have always wondered who is the "adhinayak" and "bharat bhagya
vidhata",whose praise we are singing. I thought might be Motherland India !
Our current National Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" is sung throughout the
country.
Did you know the following about our national anthem, I didn't, though i cannot vouch for the veracity of the source of this information ...
To begin with, India 's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honour of King George V and the Queen of England when they visited India in 1919.
To honour their visit Pandit Motilal Nehru had the five stanzas
included, which are in praise
of the King and Queen. (And most of us think it is in the praise of our great motherland!!!)
In the original Bengali verses only those provinces that were under British rule, i.e. Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha etc., were mentioned. None of the princely states were recognized which are integral parts of India now Kashmir, Rajasthan, Andhra, Mysore or Kerala.
Neither the Indian Ocean nor the Arabian Sea was included, since they were directly under Portuguese rule at that time. The Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka implies that King George V is the lord of the masses and Bharata Bhagya Vidhata is "the bestower of good
fortune".
Following is a translation of the five stanzas that glorify
the King:
First stanza: (Indian) People wake up remembering your good name and
ask for your blessings and they sing your glories. (Tava shubha naame jaage; tava shubha aashish maage, gaaye tava jaya gaatha)
Second stanza: Around your throne people of all religions come and give their love and anxiously wait to hear your kind words.
Third stanza: Praise to the King for being the charioteer, for leading the ancient travelers beyond misery.
Fourth stanza: Drowned in the deep ignorance and suffering,
poverty-stricken, unconscious country? Waiting for the wink of your eye and your mother's (the Queen's) true protection.
Fifth stanza: In your compassionate plans, the sleeping Bharat ( India) will wake up. We bow down to your feet O' Queen,
and glory to Rajeshwara (the King).
This whole poem does not indicate any love for the Motherland but
depicts a bleak picture. When you sing Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, whom are you glorifying? Certainly not the Motherland.
Is it God? The poem does not indicate that.It is time now to understand the original purpose and the implication of this, rather than blindly sing as
has been done the past fifty years.
Nehru chose the present national anthem as opposed to Vande Mataram
because he thought that it would be easier for the band to play!!! It was an absurd reason but Today for that matter bands have advanced and they can very well
play any music. So they can as well play Vande Mataram, which is a far better composition in praise of our Dear Motherland - India .
Wake up, it's high time! Shouldn't Vande Mataram be our National
Anthem ?
Come Join together to put Vande Mataram as our National Anthem.
Please dont break the chain lets see how many people are coming to know about it.
Think it over and BE PROUD TO BE INDIAN..
It's is a true decision.
Feeling patriotic is good but this news is full of crap.
I am proud to be an indian.Congrats all Indians and the maker of Jana Gana Mana "RABINDRANATH TAGORE" for making it in sucha way that even UNESCO gave it the title of "BEST NATIONAL ANTHEM"
JAI HIND
Great about the Anthem....
But can someone lead me to the full hymn/song/poem written by Tagore, the fist few stanzas of which are traken as the Indian National Anthem.
It would be interesting to hear someone singing the whole song.

I don't know which were the parameters of UNESCO to decide a best national anthem.Every national anthem is best for their nationals. I think, its the lyrics that has selected the best.To be an indian we must feel proud of this. We are proud of Great Ravidranath Tagore and if somebody tries to defame him by pointing out some historically untrue explanation, its his ignorance. Indians would forgive those people.
guys there is nothing to feel proud... we know that we are the best.. let it be our land ,anthem or what ever you name it, India is the best... But what's the use of it????? pl get rid of unnecessary emotions and do something for the country and make it feel proud of U(us)...
This is just awesome.
I have always been 'proud' to be an Indian.
Really a happy news :):)... This must be a startng for making India - The best of all Nations.. Hope we all would make it.. :)
Has anyone checked the authenticity of this news?...i wasn't able to find anything on the USESCO website!!!
Has anyone checked if this news is authentic?....There is no mention of this in UNESCO website.
Proud to be Indian...... India Rockssssss...........
Congratesssssssssssssssssss!!
RNT sir
Now slowly world will know,,not only the anthem but this nation whole is Great and best..
Humara Bharat Mahan..Jai Hind ..
I am very happy the Indian National Anthem is declared the best , bu all indians should be treated equally. Government of india is givng importance only to Hindi and this is serious issue for our national unity.. All languages should be made national Languages.
Srikanth
SO! Now that everyone is excited n all, can someone, I mean ANYONE provide me an official link that states this?
Its only INDIAN sites that have made a mention and 98% of these sites are personal blogs.
You cant believe until you have the proof in front of you. How can you guys believe anything. Sheeesh
ME!
India Rocks!! and the world follows..
God. Please forgive those doubting Thomases who are bent to discredit the author of our National Anthem. They either do not understand the true meaning of this great poem or are ignorant. My humble suggestion to them is to read carefully the life history of this great hermit-poet son of India. They need to be reminded that Tagore had renounced the Knighthood in protest against the Jallanwalla Bagh massacre by the British forces.
Its quite absurd....the title of "Best National Anthem" for the love of this country and God....this is no award ceremony....
The Indian National Anthem is the identity of every single Indian living on this planet....just like any other anthem.
By announcing that you think this is the best....its a defamation at a different level.....
I am proud to be an Indian
We are Indian..We are Best
Hearty congrates to My mother land
Jai Bharath!!
Jai Hind!!
I doubt the authenticity of this report. I looks odd to me that UNESCO would have this type of competeion between National Anthem. Everybody likes their own Nationl Anthem.
Bharath Matha Ki JAI........................
pride/chauvinism are not friendly to peace.let us work to make this country a peaceful land. india is a great spiritual energy. let us cultivate it, not just for indians but for the whole world. remember we are all humans first and last. the other identity is hardly relevant.jai jagat.

be Proud to be an INDIAN..
But where is the proof?
I don't think so there is any truth in the story.
proud to be a Bengalee from Calcutta
No hard feelings friends, but I think we shout too much without seeing the obvious reality. Can anyone tell me what could be the possible reason to announce National Anthem of one country as best and that too by UNESCO.
come on ... wake up ... its no where authentic. I mean .... its UNESCO for God's sake ...... not some Taliban or Al Quida crap.
Stop shouting blindly. You are just making our country shameful(yes !) by spamming all with this hoax.

I wish it were true! But it sure looks like a hoax
its a very big achievment for us, but where is the official statement.
@Manas
of course, may God forgive those at fault, but could you please throw some light on the real meaning of the national anthem.
If the meaning is what it is claimed to be in a few comments, it's really unfortunate.
..How can someone believe such nonsense..why will UNESCO waste their time in figuring out which is the best national anthem..how can you measure that at all..this news is everywhere, but can anyone give a proof..looks like one of those internet hoaxes..plz read this..
http://pundarikrajkhowa.blogspot.com/2008/09/why-are-we-so-gullible.html
Hi everyone,
This is for all the people who have spent their precious time in congratulating and commenting. We find many articles where all spend their time to comment the other. We indians are truely fit only for pulling each others legs. There is no point in congratulating or commenting over the event. Instead do whatsoever you can do to keep our land at the top.
For all those who congratulated:
Good that you proud or happy for the event. But dont let your emotions limit only in expressing your feelings in this page. Let there be some actions to prove that you are really happy.
For all those who commented:
Good that you have more thinking power and for not accepting everything without questioning. Please do maintain this where necessary. We dont question our consititution or our government. Let us have this attitude of cross checking against our system and not against these unnecessary issues. If everyone start questioning our national anthem at this time there would be just another problem and protest added to the existing problems of our country. There is nothing great in commenting. But think where you need to do that.
No such news on the UNESCO site. I am as proud to be an Indian as others here are but we do not need to circulate unsubstantiated news to enforce this pride.
While the news does the job of making us feel-good, I am not sure whether the info is correct.
Unesco site is silent on this. Try entering National Antem / Best National Anthem / jana gana mana in the Search field and see what results u get.
MAA THUJHE SALAAM. JAI HIND.
TO ALL THOSE WHO SAY JANA GANA MANA WAS IN THE PRAISE OF THE BRITISH
Please note that
1.Jana gana mana was not written with the purpose of welcoming british crown prince. The song written to welcome him was by his brother and it started like ' Eso eso he juboraj'(welcome oh crown prince)
2.The 'Bharat Bhagya Vidhata' is not King George V. It symbolises the eternal charioteer who is born in every ages to drive his followers to pilgrimage. The charioteer is inspired by Sri Krishna in Bhagwat Gita.
It surprises me to see that a blogger(supposed to be an internet savvy) is not even aware about these. Please brother, us Googlr before posting crap on your blog, because it is the same google that i used to find something, and reach at a pile of non-sense like this
for more deatils please go to http://www.ivarta.com/columns/OL_050424.htm
Thanks 4 reading
Thank your for your comments. Since the authenticity of the information is not proven, the comment thread will now remain closed.

Friends,
It's really not important that UNESCO has announced our National Anthem best or not.
The only thing important is, that every Indian (Hindustani) should believe and feel in his heart that our National Anthem is the best. Our India is the Best.
Because if we Believe the world will believe.
Jai Hind!
This is the controversy part from the Wikipedia article on Jana Gana Mana (I request to read the full poem, not just the first stanza, and understand the meaning; also note that the papers spreading their own interpretation were all under the British Govt.):
Controversy exists regarding the appropriateness of Jana Gana Mana as the national anthem of an independent India. The poem was composed in December 1911, precisely at the time of the Coronation Durbar of George V, and is considered by some to be a paean in praise of "the overlord of India's destiny". The composition was first sung during a convention of the then loyalist Indian National Congress in Calcutta on Dec. 16, 1911.[9] It was sung on the second day of the convention, and the agenda of that day devoted itself to a loyal welcome of George V on his visit to India. The event was reported thus in the Indian press:
"The Bengali poet Babu Rabindranath Tagore sang a song composed by him specially to welcome the Emperor." (Statesman, Dec. 28, 1911)
"The proceedings began with the singing by Babu Rabindranath Tagore of a song specially composed by him in honour of the Emperor." (Englishman, Dec. 28, 1911)
"When the proceedings of the Indian National Congress began on Wednesday 27th December 1911, a Bengali song in welcome of the Emperor was sung. A resolution welcoming the Emperor and Empress was also adopted unanimously." (Indian, Dec. 29, 1911)
The belief gained ground that the poem had been written in honour of the visiting monarch. Others aver that the newspaper reports cited above were misguided, the confusion arising since a different song, written in Hindi by Rambhuj Chaudhary, was sung[10] on the same occasion in praise of the monarch. However, the two poems were written in different languages; Tagore already enjoyed much fame in India, and newspaper reports are both consistent and categorical on the point of Tagore having himself sung his composition on the occasion.
Other explanations for the motivations that informed the creation of the poem have been proposed. On a visit to India, the poet Yeats received a visit from an Indian admirer who was also, in Yeats' words, "an Indian devotee" of Tagore. In a letter to a lady friend, Yeats quoted this unnamed devotee as giving him a 'strictly off the records' version of events dealing with the writing of Jana Gana Mana. That version, as presented in 1968 by the Indian Express newspaper, was this:
"He (Tagore) got up very early in the morning and wrote a very beautiful poem.... When he came down, he said to one of us, 'Here is a poem which I have written. It is addressed to God, but give it to Congress people. It will please them."[11]
Thus, Tagore is said to have written the poem in honour of God. In a letter to Pulin Behari Sen, Tagore himself wrote:[12]
"A certain high official in His Majesty's service, who was also my friend, had requested that I write a song of felicitation towards the Emperor. The request simply amazed me. It caused a great stir in my heart. In response to that great mental turmoil, I pronounced the victory in Jana Gana Mana of that Bhagya Vidhata [ed. God of Destiny] of India who has from age after age held steadfast the reins of India's chariot through rise and fall, through the straight path and the curved. That Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India, that Perennial Guide, could never be George V, George VI, or any other George. Even my official friend understood this about the song. After all, even if his admiration for the crown was excessive, he was not lacking in simple common sense."
In 2005, there were calls to delete the word "Sindh" and substitute it with the word Kashmir. The argument was that Sindh was no longer a part of India, having become part of Pakistan as a result of the Partition of 1947. Opponents of this proposal hold that the word "Sindh" refers to the Indus and to Sindhi culture and people which are an integral part of India's cultural fabric. The Supreme Court of India refused to tamper with the national anthem and the wording remains unchanged.
In July 1985 in the state of Kerala, some of the Jehovah's Witnesses' children were expelled from school under the instructions of Deputy Inspector of Schools for having refused to sing the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. A parent, V. J. Emmanuel, appealed to the Supreme Court of India for legal remedy. On August 11, 1986, the Supreme Court overruled the Kerala High Court, and directed the respondent authorities to re-admit the children into the school. The decision went on to add: "Our tradition teaches tolerance, our philosophy teaches tolerance, our Constitution practices tolerance, let us not dilute it".[13]

I came across this link to find the origin of this rumor, some people sending this article bitmap in mail as in support, there is no info in UNESCO site. Why UNESCO do all this things. Don't make yourself and other fool by spreading this fake news. Be responsible netizen. Proud to be an INIDAN!
uhh..where's the official report??? people are so idiotic..
Congratulations. Proud to be Indian.
It is a pity that the mail announcing our national anthem as the best in the world declared by UNESCO appears to be just another email hoax.
I checked the integrity of the news by visiting the unesco site.
Where I found nothing of this sort. Besides Unesco is an organization which is not supposed to carry out these kind of activities.
There are different kinds of chain mails that are used for different purposes by their originators by
* Luring the recipients towards good fortune
* Spreading the fear of doomed fate for the recipient for not forwarding them
* Lure of "free gadgets / gizmos" by forwarding them to multiple people
* Touching messages of love / fraternity / friendships etc
* Spicy scandals - political / religious in nature
So on and so forth ( kudos to the brilliant creativity of intelligent netizens to create a mass hysteria on the net)
It is wise to break the chain of the email as they are in most cases used to
* Collect thousands of email ids for mass marketing
* Spread viruses, worms or spywares which might sit in your computer and transmit your user ids / passwords to the originators, enabling them to sniff on your credit card details, your bank user ids and passwords etc.
* To spread rumours with different motives
* Or just simply with the intension to waste the band width of the network (which slows down a country's / region's network)
After knowing all these risks on the digital network, I would like to to request you all good netizens to give it a thought and break the email chains to protect your friends, loved and dear ones from unknown risks of this world wide digital network.
