The Nehru Trophy Boat Race on the Punnamda Lake, near Alappuzha, held on the second Saturday of August every year, is the most competitive and popular of the boat races. On the day of this fiercely fought boat race, the tranquil lake front is transformed into a sea of humanity with an estimated two lakh people, including tourists from abroad, coming to watch the event. For the people of each village in Kuttanad, a victory at this race for their village boat is something to be celebrated for months to come.

The major attraction of the boat race is the competition of snake boats chundanvallams or snake boats.Chundans (snake boats) are an impressive sight, measuring over 100 feet in length, with a raised prow. They were called snake boats by the former colonial rulers, who based the name on a native boat found in Norway,although Kerala's Chundans bear little resemblance to their European namesakes.

Airtel will launch the Apple iPhone 3G this month, probably on August 22 along with 20 other countries. Vodafone is also expected to launch the iphone on August 18.

Apple introduced the iPhone 3G on July 11 in 21 countries. France became the 22nd country to launch the phone on July 17. The company said 3G iPhone would go on sale in 20 additional countries by August 22. Apple has reported strong demand for the device, tallying 1 million units sold in its first weekend of release.

The phone will only have access to a limited number of the device's features, as there are no 3G networks in India now.

Nāga Panchamī (Sanskrit: नाग पंचमी) is a Hindu festival celebrated by Hindus in most parts of India. It is celebrated on Panchami in Shravan month. On this day, they worship Nāga Devata (Cobras). Cobras are considered divine in Hindu mythology. People go to temples and snake pits and they worship the snakes. They offer milk and silver jewelry to the Cobras to protect them from all evils. They also fast. This festival is to celebrate the day Lord Krishna defeated the serpent Kalia. On this day swings are put up in the village and people enjoy themselves. The married girls visit their parents during this occasion.

The festival of Nāga Panchami is celebrated by Hindus to pay respect to Nāgas. The five Nāgas worshipped on Nag Panchami are Ananta, Vāsuki, Taxak, Karkotaka and Pingala. According to a Puranic myth Brahma’s son Kashyapa had four wives. Kashyapa’s first wife gave birth to Devas, second to Garudas, third to Nāgas and fourth to Daityas. (Dainik Jagran, 25 July 2006). The third wife of Kashpa was called Kadroo, who gave birth to Nāgas. So Nāgas are also known as Kadroojā. They were the rulers of Pātāl-Loka. There is a Sanskrit shloka to remember important nine Nāgas as under: (Dainik Bhaskar 30 July 2006)

The Model Finishing School is a pioneering venture of the Government of Kerala, set up with the purpose of enhancing employability of qualified youths from the State of Kerala.

A Government of Kerala (GoK) undertaking, the Model Finishing School is a joint initiative of the IT Department, GoK and the Institute of Human Resources Development (IHRD), with the support of industry-major Infosys. The IHRD is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the institution.

The Bombay High Court denied an abortion plea by Niketa Mehta and Haresh Mehta saying there was no surety of abnormalities with the 24-week-old foetus.

Mrs Niketa Mehta has approached the court for seeking medical termination of her pregnancy because a medical opinion obtained by her suggested the child would be born incapacitated or handicapped with a possible heart defect.

Seems that all the people of the earth has become the members of some social networks. Now it is the time for outerspace social networking. Bebo, owned by AOL is offering its users a service to send a message to outer space.

Users can send in messages from Aug 4 to Sep 30, and then the top 500 text and picture messages, as voted by Bebo users, will be transmitted into space on Oct 9.

An interstellar radio telescope of the Russian National Space Agency in Ukraine. will be used to transmit messages from Bebo users into space.

The messages are expected to reach Gliese 581c, a recently discovered planet in 2029.

The project, named A Message From Earth, involves Bebo, RDF Digital, a British televisionfirm, and Alexander Zaitsev, scientist at the Russian Academy of Science's Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics.

The students of R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore has unveiled Garuda, a fuel efficient car with a mileage of 200km/litre.

The car was unveiled by International car designer, Dilip Chhabria, in Bangalore.

Eight Students comprising of Team Leader Nishant Sarawgi, and members Kayaan, Darshan, Bharat, Jacob, Krishna, Gautham and Rakshit from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, R.V. College of Engineering, Bangalore is behind this initiative

PROJECT GARUDA- RVCE SUPERMILEAGE CAR was the code name given to the project. Research is undergoing to give the car 500 km/litre in due course.

Founded on February 1, 1992 by Srinivas Kesineni (popularly known as KESINENI NANI), KESINENI TOURS & TRAVELS is the largest provider of Inter-City bus transportation, serving more than 75 destinations with about 425 schedules daily across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamilnadu.

China has setup a 32000 team with all modern technologies to prevent raining on August 8, the opening eve of Beijing Olympics 2008.

The Beijing Municipal Meteorological Bureau, is in charge of the massive 'Olympic weather modification' project.

The office has been asked to prevent rain from falling from 8.08 pm to 11.30 pm onto the bird's nest, the open-air national stadium which will host the opening ceremony.

BSNL has launchded WiMAX, is a third generation internet technology in Ahmedabad.

From mid-August, internet users in Ahmedabad can surf internet at higher speed from anywhere in the city.

BSNL is testing the wimax services in 10 cities in India including Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai.

Teej (तीज) is a fasting festival for Hindu women of some parts of India and Nepal. It takes place in August or early September. Dalip Singh Rana (born August 27, 1972) better known by his ring name The Great Khali, is an Indian professional wrestler, actor, and former powerlifter who won Mr. India in 1995 and 1996. He is currently signed to WWE on its SmackDown brand. Before embarking on his professional wrestling career, he was an officer in the Punjab state police; he was also a labourer.

Singh is a one-time World Heavyweight Champion, and has appeared in the films The Longest Yard(2005) and Get Smart (2008).

Virender Sehwag became the second Indian batsman to remain notout right from opening in an innings in a test match. Sunil Gavaskar was the only Indian before Sehwag to do that.

Sehwag's Innings was the 42nd such instance in the history of test cricket.

He is also the fifth batsman to score a double hundred and stay notout. Marvan Atapattu, Glenn Turner, Len Hutton and Bill Brown were the other batsmen to acheive this feat

Former India batsman Ashok Mankad passed away in Mumbai on Friday morning, at the age of 61. He was the son of cricket legend Vinoo Mankad.

A right-handed batsman, he played 22 Tests between 1969 and 1978, scoring 991 runs, and one ODI.

The Bahrain World Trade Center consists of two twin towers and is one of the tallest buildings in Bahrain. It is located in its capital city, Manama. The towers are each 240 meters high with a total floor count of 50. The building is the first skyscraper to integrate wind turbines into its design. As a result, the project has received several awards for sustainability, including the 2006 LEAF Awards for ‘Best Use of Technology within a Large Scheme’ and the Arab Construction World ‘Sustainable Design Award

India's first bulletproof passenger train started its service from Lumding to Haflong in the North East

The entire train is made of bulletproof material replacing the looking glass with bulletproof material and covering the engine with bulletproof sheets.

The train service was stopped train in May following a series of attacks by the Dimasa militants on railway stations and trains.

Bulletproof engines had already been pressed into service in the goods trains being run in the section.

Microsoft Corporation is working on a project code-named Midori, a non-Windows Operating System.

Managed mode is a computer program code that executes under the management of a virtual machine, unlike an unmanaged code, which is executed directly by the computer's CPU.

Midori is an Internet based Platform, based on the idea of connected systems that largely eliminates the dependencies between local applications and the hardware they run on, unlike the present-day operating systems, Reports Say.

A deadly fire broke out in a moving train passing through Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh early Friday, killing at least 20 people including a pregnant woman, three physically-challenged persons and two children. The fire erupted in S-9 coach of the Secunderabad- Kakinada Gouthami Express at 0115 hours near Kesamudram station, about 250 kilometres from Hyderabad. Update [The Hindu]
